Where to Find Natural Hair and Skin products in Trinidad

UPDATE!!!! Newer post on where else to find natural hair products in Trinidad

I have so many naturalistas in Trini asking me about products and natural ingredients I figured I should create a post for this topic. It will be a work in progress and I'll add to it as info becomes available. I must thank my sister A for being a good foot soldier and hunting (she really had to hunt) for these things. Thanks boo and HAPPY BIRTHDAY! Love u! lol. Ok, on to where to find products. All prices quoted are in TT dollars.

Mustapha's - just off the corner of Prince and Frederick Streets, Port of Spain, Trinidad.

raw shea butter - 6oz - $40

jojoba oil - 1 oz - $20

aloe vera - 1 oz - $20

also carries:
sweet almond oil
avocado oil

African black soap

The Little Store - Lower Rapsey Street, Curepe, Trinidad

castor oil - 15ml - $6

A also informs me that castor oil is readily available at drugstores around the country for $4 for the equivalent amount.

Now for this to work it must be participatory so for all my trini naturals please comment or message me at msnappytrini@gmail.com with your favorite hair products, where you get them in trini and how much it costs (with the amount of product). One question I am always getting is where in Trinidad can people get infusium 23 leave in?!!!! Pennywise used to carry it, I don't know why they stopped. Also if anybody has ever seen giovanni hair products in Trini let me know.

  1. Wow. Thank you so much! I've been trying to get some shea butter for the longest while but I just didnt know where to go. I thought pennywise would have had it being the chief hair and body store on island. When I went there it was as if they didnt even know what I was talking about!

  2. lol no prob. i feel ur pain wrt the pennywise situation. they don't have ANY of the healthy hair staples over there. lol. feel free to share ur secrets on products u love and where u get them locally by posting here or emailing me at msnappytrini@gmail.com.

Thanks for passing through and leaving a comment!

    1. Herbal shop in Carlton Centre? Where exactly is this store located? I'm in south and I'm trying to find Avocado oil. Pennywise is a lost cause...

  4. girl..u sure u have the right castor oil? I think the castor oil you purchased from the pharmacy is the laxative kind...I think the one you're looking for is similar to the Jamaican Black Castor oil for HAIR. I'm not a natural but i've been searching for something similar to JBCO for the longest...the closest i've found is some red lavender smellin liquid in a glass bottle @ Pennywise for 12 bucks(lol!)But lemme know if that castor oil is workin for u

Btw...I discovered Mustapha's about a month ago ...Thank God! cuz the mall was selling Shea Butter for $80

    ReplyDelete
  5. @ALterego, once it's pure castor oil it is the same thing. So yes u can purge with it and use it on your hair. lol I love JBCO and personally that's the only kind I have used but based on ppl's experiences I have read online they are both good to go. My sister has been using the drugstore regular castor oil and it's working fine for her. I say if you can't have the one you love, love the one you have. lol thanks for commenting!

  6. thank you so much for posting where these products are available in Trini. I subscribe to Kimmay and wanted to do her leave in, but could not find the jojoba oil or the aloe vera juice (I was so desperate, I was going to pick and aloes leaf from in my yard and juice it). When I ask for these products in the drugs stores (in St. James) they look at me as though I am crazy.

Also, would you happen to know where I can find the ph strips? I am a hair product junkie and would love to test their ph levels.

thanks so very much once again,
    Nats

  8. I use Kinky curly products and Miss Jessie's line as well..i get the Kinky Curly at a palce called Body Beautiful on the Ave. and i order the Miss Jessie's stuff online. And yes...i too have been trying to get Infusium 23 Leave In as well...may have to order online that too.

    ReplyDelete
  9. @ anon, no prob. As for the pH strips, I'm not sure but i would imagine drugstores, alternative health stores or pet stores that stock supplies for fish tanks may have them. If you find them let me know!

    ReplyDelete
  10. @Jolisa no prob. As far as the stylists go, I only know loctitians and I think Body beautiful sometimes does Kinky Curly applications if you make an appointment. Sorry. But if you find one let me know!

  11. You can get Mixed Chicks leave in conditioner at Onika's...Upstairs Carlton Center.

  12. pH test strips or pH paper is usually found at lab supply places like western Scientific etc but you may also have luck at a pool supply place or Peakes. Hope this helps, I almost bald but found the page while searching for Little Store

    ReplyDelete
  13. @ anon thanks for the tip about the pH paper! You should just go visit the Little Store anyways. you will be surprised at what you can find in there. I love that place.

  14. I've been looking for local places to buy natural hair care products. About 2 weeks ago I cam across another local business called Mayleah's Organics. They do deliveried anywhere in Trinidad or Tobago & the best part is that they sell online! They have a brand of hair products called Ikove which is from Brazil i think.I am really in love with the cupuacu butter shampoo & avocado conditioner! They only have shampoos and conditioners now but i think they are bringing in a leave in conditioner this week which I am dying to try. What I love most is that their products are all natural or organic & they provide a list of all the ingredients in every product too! The page is www.facebook.com/mayleahsorganics

  15. This is great info mznappytrini.

I'm moving back to T'dad soon and it's good to know that I don't have to carry a year's supply of shea butter with me lol

With respect to the aloe vera - you can use the gel obtained directly from the plant. Cost cutting measure cause times hard

    2. Its confusing to see people talk about not being able to get shea butter. In POS they sell the containers for $20 and everyone knows what shea butter is. One container lasts months and this is with me co-washing and sealing twice every week.

    1. Hey- I saw the JBCO in Superpharm and bought it immediately. I had been contemplating buying it online and bringing it in through my sky box, but at $10-15US per bottle plus about $5US shipping to my sky box and about $40-$50TT to ship it here(and I'm not counting any possible customs fees, $120 to have it immediately is a good deal!

      Delete
    2. Hi. How often do you use the oil combos? daily? weekly? I was just contemplating doing a coconut oil, olive oil and carrot oil combo along with shea butter for conditioning. Is your rosemary oil etc... combo better (and is it expensive...lol)

  18. Does anyone know where I can buy a denman brush or a good detangling brush in Trinidad?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Please don't try to make those brush companies rich. They have enough money. Detangling is all in the technique. Finger detangling using technique. Don't believe the lies that you need all the products other people use. Many of the products people promote on youtube are products given to them by companies to help market the useless products. Use what you have and learn the best techniques.

  19. Girl you didn't tell me that the custom in the store (Mustafa's)is that females must speak to the female attendant and males to the male attendant! I believe it has to do with their religious customs - which I respect - and I hope I did not offend anyone by trying to talk to both the male and female attendant. Besides that, thanks for this link-up. Too many females are selfish with info about great hair care and we seriously need to move from that so thanks girl :) muwah!

  20. Hi all the anon folks!! thanks for reading and sharing. FINALLY somebody found infusium!!! if u really want the chilli bibi let me know lol. Denman brush I have no idea, haven't seen any in trinidad. Personally I prefer my fingers and a good wide tooth comb for detangling. If you want it as a styling tool well that's another story. Opps about Mustafa's, I'm sure they weren't mad, Trini being as cosmopolitan as it is that must happen lots of times on a daily basis. Glad you found the info useful, sharing is caring in my book lol. besos right back at u!

  24. Hi everyone. I'm 5 months natural and from Trinidad (currently living in Japan). I didn't see anyone mention anything about Body Beautiful on Ariapita avenue (unless I was skimming through too fast). Body Beautiful carries all natural products for natural hair and also for your skin. They have shea butter, black castor oil, black soap and also Jane Carter solution products and Kinky Curly Curling custard which are both AMAZING products for natural hair. The owner also has natural hair so she will be able to give you advice. I've been where you all are and trust me...Body Beautiful is amazing. Hair it is is also on the avenue and they sell Miss Jessie's and Carol's daughter. I am not a fan of Miss Jessie's at alllll but if you want, try it out. It smells amazing but dont be fooled.

You could make fresh coconut oil and use olive oil rather than follow de trends that are meant for women whose hair suffer thru the cold fall and snowy winter. Yuh have to understand that it's us Caribbeans abroad who moved this natural hair movement. Everybody else jus capitalizing on it and following the trend. Don't get yuh money caught in de trend. Watch youtube videos for technique not all de products.

  40. I LOVE THIS SITE!!! I know this is an old post but i am so glad to see other trini natural women talking about hair *jumps for joy*. I BC'd a month and a half ago and i've already tried MANY products.. I absolutely LOVE Giovanni SAS Deeper moisture conditioner and the Direct Leave-In. You can buy Giov at Starlite Pharmacy but they take a long while to restock apparently. I went to get the leave-in and was told they should have more by December, hopefully...scream! Anyway, 'Live Green' which is located at the start of the Avenue if you're coming from the West, in an obscure side street opposite the stadium, also carries Giovanni. They are a bit more expensive but i guess thats the price i'll have to pay. 622-8911; 685-9291.

I saw Mustapha's the other day but they were closed for juma (prayer) but now that i know they carry shea butter, i'll def be going back.

  45. I BC 3 months ago after a 2 year transition, i find the best thing for me is to keep it simple yet use quality products. Eco styler gel, i see that selling in a chinese store on charlotte street close to pennywise...but is $25 for a tiny tub...not worth it to me. IC fantasia (blue) is a best gel with the same properties , hold, shine and definition - for that same price i get a much bigger tub of it.

Regimen for my 13 inch 4a hair:

Cleanse weekly - ACV and water mix
Co wash (if i feel during week)- vo5 moisture milk conditioner
Rinse out conditioner- Tresseme Naturals Moisture (real best imo)
DC (every2 weeks)- Olive oil replenishing pak
Leave in- Same dang Tresseme (double duty lol)
Moisturize- Glycerin and water mix in spray bottle
Sealant- Shea butter whipped with coconut oil
    Styling- IC fantasia Gel

It may seem a lot down but the Shea butter, acv, glycerine lasts me almost a year cuz a little goes a long way. The conditioners and gel last me a couple of months.
Simple, cheap and quite effective. :)

  55. Hi all very informative and thanks for sharing. I have a few questions though.
My hair is natural about 3years now. I saw you all mentioned a lot of products but I'm not sure which is for what. So my questions are:
    1. What can I put in my hair to increase growth.
2.What can I use to have it at a manageable texture. I observe some ladies with natural hair in the streets and something tells me its a product they are using to get that wavy look texture.
    3.Where can I find a good,reliable natural hairstylists who's not too expensive

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hi! thanks for reading. I'll attempt to answer your questions but I hope others will chime in as well

      1) I personally can't vouch for anything to increase your growth rate but having a healthy diet and drinking lots of water may help. Other ppl use vitamins, biotin, monistat etc as growth aids but I personally dont see the need for them. growth is usually not the problem. retaining your length usually is. and retaining your length can be addressed through low manipulation and moisturizing to maintain the health of your hair and prevent breakage.

      2) I'm not sure what is the wavy texture you are referring too but you must remember not everybody's texture is the same so it is entirely possible that you may not be able to achieve a look that you like on somebody else. if your hair is a 4abz texture like mine, we can get a semi-wavy look i guess using a twsitout, braidout or bantu knot out (youtube them).

      3) I haven't used any local stylists but I have seen a few persons use Renee at Body Beautiful on the Avenue and they seemed pleased with their results.

Hope that helps! hit me up on facebook if you have further questions

    1. Hi, you can get a 3oz bottle of tea tree oil for about $20 or $25 (can't recall the exact price, at most $30) at Mustapha's located on Prince Street. It's about three stores down when coming from frederick street on the left hand side. Hope this helps. :)

    1. If you have trouble finding the eco styler gel you can also learn to boil flaxseeds and use the gel that results. The instructions can be found on youtube.

  62. I also got caught up in the hunt for Infusium 23 in P.O.S last year. I got so fed up when I couldn't find it, I decided right there and then to switch products. I choose Organic Root Stimulator Elastic-i-Tea herbal leave in conditioner. This product is fabulous, it softens and stretches out your hair after washing. Price $43.50. You can get it at almost any pharmacy, beauty shop or Pennywise.

  70. Thanks alot for you information. Alot of the pharmacies have Castor oil, almond oil, Carrot oil, and Rosemary oil, and the prices are reasonable. Rosemary oil is 23.95, the most expensive. I got those at Tropical Pharmacy in Pointe a Pierre, Marabella. Alma oil I got in Pennywise, San Fernando. they also have a very nice Vatika oil for falling hair and thinning with Cactus, actually they have another one with castor oil. they are both good as I have been using and getting good results.
I am having trouble getting a Brown Henna dye to colour my hair and cannot get the type I want, so will have to try and get it from abroad. Ladies there is alot of health and cosmetic and hair information on Youtube, just put in your information and you will get whatever natural health situation you need and you will get the info.
